Forward Management Pittsburgh, Slumlord Still Hasn't Scheduled Exterminator After 3 Weeks

And now, a review of Forward Management Pittsburgh landlord's poor handling of our apartment bug problem. Try the 'bugs' label for more fun!

I wrote about buying a bag of Diatomaceous earth a couple weeks ago, since Forward Management Pittsburgh did not have the decency to return any of my calls about this flea infestation.

Diatomoceous Earth is basically ground up algae that works like tiny shards of glass, but looks like white powder to the human eye. The bug gets it on himself and it slowly tears away at the bug's external shell until it dehydrates and dies. It's non-toxic, but you don't want to breath in too much (i.e., wear a mask/bandanna while applying). I used a broom to sweep a fine dust over all the floors in the apartment, lightly dusted underneath the sofa cushions, under the bed, bed legs, the top of the mattress, etc. and then let it sit for two weeks. If you don't clean it up there's no need to reapply as diatomoceous earth works through physical means and doesn't really expire. It's not an immediate fix, so you'll have to be prepared to walk around in dust with your pants tucked into you socks for a week and a half, but it's effective and non-toxic, especially compared to exterminator treatments.

After 5 days, the number of bug bites went down considerably and by day 9 I stopped getting bitten. It's been over two weeks and I'm pretty sure we're good to go now. In this case, it worked on fleas but the internetz tells me it works on bed bugs and cockroaches, too. I'm not sure how well it will prevent re-infestation from the neighbors' cats / wherever the fleas came from. At $8 for a 2lb bag from the local hardware chain store, Diatomoceous earth is also priced quite well. 2lbs will probably treat our apartment ~20 times, lol. However, don't use it outside as it will kill other insects like lady bugs and the like.

Now if only we could use it to get rid of slumlord management companies like Forward Management.

Forward Management Pittsburgh Will Not Schedule Exterminator Or Return Calls

I called the Forward Management,LLC Pittsburgh [again] today at around 4pm, but no one answered the phone. I left a message requesting that an exterminator be scheduled to treat our apartment. Also, no one has called me, as I was told I would be when I called on Monday.

This Forward Management apartment has a flea bug infestation, and no one will schedule an exterminator, much less return my calls.

[Edit 11/5/12: 1.5 weeks later, and still no one has returned my calls.]

Forward Management Is Nonresponsive About Bug Infestation

Review the Forward Management Pittsburgh 'bugs' label for the full story.

I called Forward Management, LLC Pittsburgh today about the flea infestation [again]. The woman who answered manages the Brentwood apartments, so she said she would get Tina (who is the leasing manager for the Pittsburgh apartments) to call me back.

[Edit 10/27/12: No one has returned my call about the bug infestation at this Forward Management apartment building yet. How long does it take to schedule an exterminator?!]

Here's some more new bug bites from yesterday in my Forward Management Pittsburgh apartment. It seems if you wear socks over your pants, then the fleas start biting your torso. I'm betting the bugs are coming from another apartment (I know the upstairs neighbor has several cats). I don't think the pet policy requires cats to be treated for fleas. So, this could end up being a repeat infestation.

I just don't know why Forward Management won't just schedule an exterminator.

[Edit 11/5/12: 2 weeks later, and still no one has returned my calls.]

Flea Bites from Forward Management, LLC Pittsburgh Apartment

Flea bites from a Forward Management Pittsburgh Apartment (right ankle).

I thought that by wearing pants and socks around the apartment that I would avoid being bitten to pieces. I was wrong. These all appeared yesterday (although the photos are not all-inclusive).

Even as I sit here writing this post, I just caught another flea biting my arm. It's in the bag with its brother. The apartment has been treated with Diatomaceous earth on my own dime. 'Should hopefully destroy them in a week. I'll still have to call the landlord to get an exterminator in. This is awful.

I have never had fleas in an apartment before, so I do not know where these are coming from. We do not have pets, so the fleas must come from the building itself or possibly neighbors with untreated cats.

Fleas in Forward Management, LLC Pittsburgh Apartment

Fleas in a Forward Management Pittsburgh Apartment.

After a couple of weeks of not seeing my bug biters, I finally caught one trying to get my right hand. It took about two days for it to die in this plastic bag.

I'm fairly certain it's a flea. It's sort of flat-ish, and the other three times I saw one biting me, they just disappeared (probably by jumping). It has some long back legs, and doesn't appear to have wings.

We do not have pets, so the fleas must come from the building itself or possibly neighbors with untreated cats.

Biting Bug Problem

Bug bites from Forward Management Pittsburgh apartment (right foot).
I haven't left the apartment in two days, but I somehow ended up with ~10 new bug bites all over my legs and feet. This has been happening off and on since I moved in this month, but these past two days have been terrible. All the photos show bites that have occurred in the apartment in the last two days (i.e., labeled "new"), and scars from older bites (labeled "old").

I've checked my mattress for bed bug evidence and haven't seen any fleas. However, the upstairs neighbor has multiple cats, so it's possible these are fleas, it's just an early infestation and we haven't caught any yet. I put out some DIY flea traps, but didn't catch anything.

'Called the Forward Management Pittsburgh today and they said the whole building was treated before we moved in and the exterminator wanted to do a follow-up. Apparently other units have been having similar complaints over the past few months. They'll put up fliers before doing their autumn extermination follow-up.

Called Forward Management w Maintenance Requests, Waiting

A quick review of how long it takes Forward Management Pittsburgh to respond to a fairly important maintenance call:

I called Forward Management Pittsburgh (412-885-1094) at 10:47 am on October 1st to have the water damage above the shower painted and to have them change the locks on the apartment.

[Edit 10/8/12: No one has called to schedule the lock change yet, and the bathroom wall is still water damaged. Called again at 1:45pm.]

[Edit 10/16/12: I called Forward Management Pittsburgh again at 1:20pm today to report that the lock change has still not happened.]

[Edit 10/17/12: A maintenance guy stopped by today and installed new locks and plastered/painted the water-damaged bathroom wall. It only took three weeks and three phone calls to Forward Management Pittsburgh. Three weeks!]

Forward Management: The Good

In this move (2012), I'm moving from one Forward Management property (APT1) to another one, a half mile away (APT2). The new tenant for APT1 wanted to move in on the last day of the month, which required that I move out a day early (on Aug 30 rather than 31), which required that the current tenant of APT2 move out two days early (Aug 29 instead of 31).

By some miracle, the Pittsburgh account manager made it all happen. Everyone moved. We all had to take our apartments 'as is' (i.e., no painting/cleaning in between, whatever the prior tenant left behind). But it worked. No storing stuff in a moving truck overnight!

Forward Management Pittsburgh and Bathroom Leak Call #10

At approximately 2:30pm today (5/10/12), I called Forward Management Pittsburgh and submitted a maintenance request for the bathroom leak, again. It appears that since the last time they painted over the leak, the leak has decided to move across the replaced dry wall to come out at the seam between the bathroom window and the wall. You can see where the water comes out most of the time, as the paint is tinted orange in that area. See photo below:

[Edit 5/21/12: A maintenance guy entered my apartment at ~11am on 5/16/12, mumbled something about getting permission from the upstairs neighbor, and has not returned since.]

Forward Management Pittsburgh Fails to Fix Bathroom Ceiling Leak, #9

I returned to my apartment after a two week vacation, only to find that the bathroom leak "fix" that was done nearly a month ago by Forward Management Pittsburgh has once again failed. This time, the water is coming out of the right side of the new dry wall, landing on top of the toilet, filling my Christmas vase with nasty water, and destroying the artwork on the wall. Photos below.

This will be the NINTH time I have called about this same problem, in a little over two years.

Water Damage on the Ceiling & Water Damage/Paths on the Wall

Close Up of Wall and Ceiling water damage (this was just painted a month ago, so the streaks are from a new leak)

Water Damage to the Artwork on the Wall

Water Collected Over Two Weeks by Christmas Vase
This vase had no water when I left it two weeks ago. All the water in the vase is from the bathroom ceiling leak.

Water Residue Left on Toilet Seat Lid from Leak
The leak must also be coming out from the middle of the ceiling in order to land on the bathroom toilet lid and leave behind this water residue.
